Our Story
Once upon a time, in a quaint little town in Southern Indiana, there was a small business called Happy and Hateful. The name alone might make you smile—after all, who wouldn't want a little happy with their hateful? A combination like that is an unpredictable balance that sparks curiosity... just like a little black cat, perhaps? So, to fully understand the name, you must meet the cat behind the label- Pearl! Pearl was a no-nonsense, 20-pound black cat with an attitude that could rival a cranky old man.
Pearl was not just any cat; she was the queen of judgy glares. If you dared to walk past her without paying homage, you would be met with a look that could freeze your soul. She spent her days lounging on her favorite bookshelf, surveying the outdoors and contemplating the existential dread of being a cat in a world full of humans. Pearl had a particular disdain for selfies, believing that if she wanted to be photographed, she’d have her own reality show. And kids? Don’t even get her started; they were the bane of her existence, always invading her space with their sticky little hands.
Now Pearl didn't get her lovely lady lumps on a whim. She demanded those curves! If her bowl got too close to empty, she would unleash a vocal performance that could easily be mistaken for a banshee's wail. "How dare you let me see the bottom of my bowl!" she seemed to scream. It was this very attitude that inspired the business name—because who said you can’t be happy while being a little hateful?
Yet, there was a soft side to Pearl that emerged occasionally, usually under the cover of darkness. She would stealthily creep onto the bed at night, aiming to lay across your chest like a fuzzy blanket of doom. "Who needs ribs anyway?" she purred as she tried her best to suffocate you with her love.
We got to love Pearl for 12 wonderful years. We took her in as a stray kitten and are grateful for every minute we had with her- attitude and all. In Pearl's honor, we’re excited to announce that a portion of our proceeds will be dedicated to helping our furry friends in local animal shelters who are waiting for their forever homes. Because even a cat with an attitude like Pearl knows that every pet deserves a loving family—preferably one that understands that fine line between happy and hateful.
